My boyfriend is reading the Communist Manifesto for his AP Euro class.

Ironically, my boyfriend is a big believer in classical liberalism (He basically knows Locke’s Second Treatise on Government like the back of his hand) and is a capitalist. They were supposed to pick an “ism” to do a report and project over, he was left with the two options of Liberalism or Communism and he picked Communism. This surprised many people, since his views aren’t necessarily unknown. He explained to me that, even though he knows the base beliefs of communism and understands the differences between the theory itself and the idiotic stereotype, he wished to read it from Marx himself to gain a better understanding, even though he most likely won’t completely agree. This made me very happy, not because I want him to be a Communist or anything (I am not a Communist, I personally don’t know where I align economically for many reasons), but because he was willing to learn more about it. Even if he wasn’t my boyfriend I’d be proud of him, since being open to new ideas or ones different than yours more of, is a sign of a growing intellectual. Even though I never doubted this in him, it’s still nice to see such a willingness to learn.
